Operational Cost of Ownership Calculator Tool

To help understand the economic benefits of our electro vehicles we have provided a similar tool to the Carbon Calculator Tool which examines the operational costs of ownership factors over a 3 year period, again comparing conventional vehicles with electric and including fuel costs, maintenance costs, insurance costs, battery costs etc.

We have ignored potential financing costs and any npv calcs as well as downtime costs as the electro vehicles we provide are used more in “utility” roles versus “mission critical” roles such as a harvester.

For the sake of greater accuracy we have not used the averaged AA fuel rates especially with fuel increases happening almost monthly. The tool allows you to change the price per litre (see above for last update) depending if you live at the coast or inland and should the fuel price increase again in the near future.

We have used the National Average Tarriff for the tool but if you are in need of a different industry sector/location tarriff download the Eskom Tarriff History reference article here (PDF – 63kb).

In the Daily section of the tool where items are shown in yellow fill in the details of your existing vehicles for either the Diesel or Petrol option depending on what you currently have, how many kms travelled per day and the average fuel consumption you are currently experiencing.

In the Annual section of the tool fill in the yellow items for the vehicle purchase price excluding VAT and the annual license fees.In the Monthly section of the tool for the items shown in yellow fill in the number of days the vehicle is used per month and the AA Rate insurance percentage e.g vehicles costing between R100,001 and R250,000 are rated at 7.43%. Fill in the AA Rate for service and repairs as well as the AA rate for tyres e.g for a diesel 2.5L bakkie the service rate is 25.82 c/km and the tyre rate is 11.59 c/km.

In the 3yr Cost of ownership section of the tool fill in the expected resale value based on the vehicles age and the number of kms used in the 3 year period.

You are now able to review the Monthly and Annual operational costs as well as the 3 year Total Cost of Ownership of the vehicles being compared.

Please note:

  1. That we have included the cost of a complete replacement set of batteries for the Electric Utility in the 3rd year as a Deep Cycle battery set should last between 3 to 5 years depending on the usage profile and recharging of the vehicle.
  2. No allowance has been made for both the typical Quad bike and Electric Utility for annual licensing as neither are road legal in South Africa.

  4. The Electric Utilities run 4kW DC motors and consume power/energy at an average of 167.18 watt hrs/km. The cost of a kW hr is based on the current national average rate of R1.00, courtesy of Eskom.
  5. Eskom charge differing rates for different industry sectors and private consumers and for different locations as well. For our model we have used the Rural average rate but you can change the rate according to your industry sector or location as per the Eskom Tarriff History reference article.
