Electric Vehicle Best Practice Operations Guide


The following best practice guide relates to ALL electric vehicles and not specifically to the Melex electric vehicles:

  • Vehicles must be put on charge every night and left to complete a FULL charge cycle. There should be No lunch time charging and tea time charging i.e. No Short charging. Please note that the average charging time for deep cycle batteries is approx 8 hours.
  • When a vehicle is run and the low battery warning indicator commences do NOT continue driving until the vehicle is no longer able to move. Fully recharge the batteries as soon as possible. Otherwise severe damage may occur to the battery pack and/or a major reduction in the battery life due to deep discharge.
  • To keep the batteries in good condition, charge the vehicle after each daily use, regardless of the   “Fuel Gauge” level at the end of the days use.  
  • Battery water should be checked every 1 week and topped up with distilled, de-ionised battery water.
  • When a vehicle or battery pack is new it may take up to 20 charges before the battery pack is able to reach it’s maximum storage capacity. Care must be taken in this period to not deep discharge the battery pack (below 20%), otherwise battery life expectancy is likely to be reduced.
  • Vehicles that are stored for lengthy periods of time need to be switched to the “TOW” mode, or in the case of 36V vehicles the battery pack disconnected.
  • If a vehicle is to be unused for months at a time, the vehicle should be driven once a month a short distance and then fully recharged. If it is not possible to move the vehicle then charge the pack fully once a month.
  • If the the vehicle is to be towed, swith the RUN/TOW switch into the TOW position and do NOT exceed 20 km/h while towing, otherwise severe damage will be caused to the motor. (For 36V vehicles not fitted with RUN/TOW switches ensure the ignition is switched off and the positive battery lead has been disconnected)
  • If work is to be performed on the vehicle, switch the “RUN/TOW “ switch into the TOW position as a safety precaution. (For 36V vehicles not fitted with RUN/TOW switches ensure the ignition is switched off and the positive battery lead has been disconnected)
  • Avoid stepping on the brake and accelerator at the same time, damage may occur to the motor.
  • Do Not switch the Forward/Reverse switch to the opposing direction while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Never “freewheel” the vehicle downhill with the forward/Reverse switch in the “middle” position, this can cause damage to the motor and/or battery pack.
  • Do NOT hold the vehicle stationary on the accelerator on an incline, use the brake.
  • Avoid stopping and pulling away on a steep incline, preferably try and start on a level area
  • Avoid directly hosing water onto the controller, battery set and charger inlet when cleaning vehicle
